Wood as Source, Collaborator & Canvas

St. Petersburg, FL — A new body of work by artist Scott Solary will be on view in SECOND NATURE, opening May 9, 2026 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Forever Florida Gallery on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. The exhibition presents Solary’s latest explorations of wood grain, as his source, collaborator and ultimately his canvas, wherein he transforms the natural grain patterns into evocative landscapes blurring the lines between material and illusion.
Working with local and reclaimed wood, Solary composes each piece to highlight the organic flow of grain, beginning with a careful study of the wood’s surface—the movement, texture, and patterns suggest horizon lines, flowing water, cloud forms, or distant hills. Rooted in biophilic art—an approach that seeks to connect people more deeply with nature through design and natural materials—his work invites viewers into a quiet, immersive dialogue with the environment. The result is a series of pieces that feel both grounded in nature and quietly surreal, each one entirely one-of-a-kind, shaped as much by the artist’s hand as by the inherent character of the wood itself.
SECOND NATURE continues Solary’s ongoing investigation into perception and natural patterning, with new works that emphasize depth, reflection, and optical nuance. Each composition reveals the uniqueness of its source material, ensuring that no two pieces can ever be replicated.
The opening reception on May 9 is free and open to the public.
